Unmanned Chinese Helicopter Completes First Flight

Aircraft Developed By Beijing Normal University Accomplished Antarctic Mission

The first flight of a Chinese unmanned helicopter developed by Beijing Normal University saw the aircraft complete a mission at the Great Wall Station in Antarctica.

The Chinese Xinhua news service reports that the Polar Hawk-2 aircraft captured over 350 high-resolution images during the flight on the Fildes Peninsula. It captured images of the station, as well as the plant and animal life in the vicinity.

The aircraft is powered by a lithium battery. I has a range of about one mile and can fly to an altitude of about 3,000 feet, according to Cheng Xiao, the leader of the research team that conducted the flight.

Similar aircraft have conducted flights at the Svalbard archipelago in the arctic region, and Zhongshan Station in Antarctica.
