FAA Expresses Concern Over Santa Monica Collection Of Landing Fees

Can You Say "Gouging?" I Knew That You Could...

The fine folks at NBAA tell ANN that on November 10, David L. Bennett, FAA director of airport safety and standards, sent a letter to Santa Monica Municipal Airport (SMO) to express the agency's concern over the city's collection of landing fees under a scheme designed to heavily penalize landings by heavier business aviation aircraft.

Bennett urged that the city "suspend implementation of the new schedule landing fee until the current formal Part 16 process is complete or, in the alternative, that the city place all incremental revenue collected under the new schedule in an escrow account until a final determination on the compliance issue." NBAA and a number of its Members filed a complaint against Santa Monica on October 21 relating to the new weight-based landing fees at SMO.
