Bomb Scare Forces Italians To Scramble

Diplomatic Aircraft Forced To Land -- No Bomb

The extra air security over Rome for Pope John Paul's funeral was put to the test Friday, when a diplomatic aircraft was forced to land by Italian fighters because of a reported bomb on board.

The aircraft, type as yet unknown, was escorted to a military base where its crew was disembarked and it was checked thoroughly.

No bomb was found, according to Italian authorities.

"We saw that there was no threat on board. We let them take off again to Ciampino, where the Macedonian delegation was waiting," an air force official told Reuters.

The aircraft was on its way to Rome to pick up members of the Macedonian delegation to the pontiff's funeral. The flight had departed from Belgrade with only crew on board, he said.
