NWA Union Leaders Okay Pay Cut Proposal

Issue Now Moves On To Rank And File

Leaders of Northwest Airlines' unionized pilots Saturday put their unanimous okie-dokie on an agreement that will cut pilots' compensation by $265 million a year.

The two-year deal now goes to the rank and file for a final vote.

"We believe this agreement is in the best interest of Northwest pilots and our company," said Mark McClain, chairman of the ALPA's Master Executive Council in a statement after the vote.

Even if the pilots say yes to the cuts, Northwest still has a long way to go before the airline is out of its financial quagmire. Before the ALPA leadership vote, NWA said it needs $950 million in union concessions to avoid bankruptcy.

The ratification vote is expected to begin October 25th and will run through November 5th, according to the ALPA.
