'Model Aviation Day' Event Saw Participation From Clubs Around The Country
A total of $76,000 was raised for and presented to the Wounded Warrior Project as a result of the efforts of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and its chartered clubs that participated in the inaugural National Model Aviation Day. AMA clubs across the country celebrated National Model Aviation Day on August 17, 2013, by welcoming the public to their flying sites to enjoy a day of model aviation activities.
“In this inaugural year, we are both pleased and proud of our club’s support of National Model Aviation Day, and the results of their efforts in raising such a substantial amount of money for a deserving charity,” said Dave Mathewson, executive director of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. “The event was a great success, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s celebration.”
AMA President Bob Brown welcomed Warrior Speak spokesperson, Cynthia Parsons to AMA Headquarters in Muncie, IN on December 11, and presented her with a check for the $76,000. Cynthia is the mother of a wounded veteran who has benefitted from many of the programs Wounded Warrior Project provides.
National Model Aviation Day was created by the Academy of Model Aeronautics—the country’s foremost organization for aeromodeling—to celebrate the history of model aviation and to promote the hobby. Several states issued proclamations recognizing the occasion.
Participating clubs offered visitors an introduction to model aviation through flight demonstrations, static displays, hands-on activities, refreshments, and opportunities to experience model aircraft flight.
