NAA Announces Postponement of Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race

The Other Pulitzer Prize …

Founded in 1905 as the Aero Club of America (ACA), by members of the Automobile Club of America, the organization known today as the National Aeronautic Association of the United States (NAA) is the oldest national aviation club in the United States and one of the oldest in the world.

The non-profit association’s mission statement is "…dedicated to the advancement of the art, sport, and science of aviation in the United States.”

In January 2023, the National Aeronautic Association announced that the Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race was to be postponed from May 2023 to an as-of-yet undetermined date later in the year.

Introduced in 2021 at the 15th Annual Electric Aircraft Symposium as a one-thousand nautical-mile cross-country air race for zero-emission electric propulsion aircraft of all types, the race is intended to revive the tradition of the Pulitzer air races first held by the NAA in the early 1920s as the highlight of the Jazz Age’s popular National Air Races.

The contemporary race is open to fixed wing airplanes, rotorcraft, and innovative multi-rotor aircraft deriving of the nascent Advanced Air Mobility sector.

NAA president and CEO Greg Principato stated: “The NAA remains fully committed to holding the Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race as an exciting venue for the advancement of practical electric propulsion aircraft.” Mr. Principato added: “The NAA intends to host a world class race event for this new class of aircraft. However, economic conditions and a strong priority by the aircraft manufacturers on product development and certification hampered our ability to secure the necessary sponsorships in time for a race in 2023.”

Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race director Scott Neumann remarked: “We had a great response from potential competitors in the Pulitzer race during our pre-registration last December, and are confident that like-minded partners will join us for the race going forward and make the Pulitzer Trophy the standard of excellence in electric aviation.”
