Henry Coates’s Six-Year Run Comes to an End
Henry “Hank” Coates recently confirmed that he is stepping down from his position as the CEO and President of the Commemorative Air Force. This follows six years of leadership in the organization.
“It is time for me to move on, hand over the reins and enjoy watching the CAF from the sidelines,” he said.
The Commemorative Air Force works to preserve American military aviation history through warbird education, restoration, flights, and exhibits. The organization owns and operates 170 vintage military aircraft, maintained by over 12,000 CAF members in 80 US and foreign unit locations.
Coates took his place as the President and CEO of the CAF on July 23, 2018. He previously served as a Naval Officer and Aviator for nearly 23 years, flying numerous aircraft and spending two tours directing foreign military flight training. His Naval career came to a close while acting as Executive Officer at Naval Air Station Meridian. During his CAF presidency, Coates oversaw and assisted the organization through several key milestones and events regarding safety, operations, development, and membership.
“I am confident and enthusiastic that I am leaving the CAF in a better place than when I arrived,” Coates commented. “Many challenges, changes and events have happened on my watch. All necessary to move the CAF to be best positioned for the future. I was privileged to participate in what was a fun and genuinely rewarding ride both professionally and personally.
David Oliver has taken over as Interim President/CEO following Coates’s retirement. He previously served as Chief Operating Officer of the CAF for 13 years. This experience makes the CAF confident that he will keep operations running while they conduct a search for Coates’s permanent replacement.
“The organization is deeply grateful for his years of service and for the many accomplishments achieved under his guidance,” the CAF announced. “Best wishes are extended to Hank for his future endeavors.”
