Jim spoke with Dave Salvador, VP Aftermarket Channel for Gogo Business Aviation, said the company has been investing in future technologies to meet the continuing demands of pilots and passengers. They have been investing in new satellite solutions as well as Air-To-Ground (ATG) connectivity.
Gogo has a new satellite product called Galileo, which is connected to the OneWeb Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network to provide Gogo’s internet service, and Hughes Network Systems is Gogo’s partner on the antenna. There are two versions of antenna and the new HDX antenna is being installed on their Challenger and will be tested in flight shortly. They anticipate bringing it to market by the end of 2024.
Gogo is also evolving the network for ATG connectivity for all GA aircraft up to the VVIP level such as Boeing Business Jets. The new ATG network technology product is known as AVANCE and represents an upgrade from cellular to the latest LTE technology.
The currently installed ATG boxes 5000 4000 1000 2000 will not work on the new network when the transition happens on December 31, 2025. There are thousands of aircraft with the existing version installed and only a finite amount of floor space and technicians to perform the installations. That means that lead time to get the upgrade installed is 16 months. There is an exchange program for boxes installed on existing customers’ aircraft. However, those who do not upgrade before December 31, 2025 will not be entitled to equipment rebates and will lose connectivity at the transition, so they have to start thinking about getting the upgrade installation scheduled very soon.
