Three Unions Contemplating US Airways Strike

Airline Wants Bankruptcy Judge To Throw Out Labor Contracts

The chips are beginning to stack up against US Airways and its attempt to annul contracts with some of its major unions. Three of those unions have either voted or are voting to strike the bankrupt carrier.

The airline, which is in its second bankruptcy in two years, wants US Bankruptcy Court Judge Stephen Mitchell to let US Airways void its contracts with its unions if they don't fork over more concessions.

Consider:

The Communications Workers of America's national executive board has unanimously voted to strike. That would put about 6,000 passenger service agents on the picket line.

The Association of Flight Attendants, are voting on a strike between now and December 13th.

The International Association of Machinists is also considering a strike vote.

US Airways wants to become the first airline to void its labor agreements since Continental did so in 1983. Judge Mitchell is hearing arguments on that between now and December 17th.
