Classic Aero-TV: Real Aviation Leadership -- AEA's Paula Derks, Part 1

A Comprehensive Overview of the State Of The Avionics Industry

While at the Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) convention held in the Spring of 2014, ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell interviewed Paula Derks, the President of AEA. This video is part 1 of this interview. When asked about the general condition of the aircraft electronics industry, Derks replied that sales are up and back-orders are starting to take place.

The advancement of aircraft avionics is not only having its effect on new production aircraft, older planes now become more usable and efficient through the avionics and new engine indicating systems. Derks points out that the government regulatory process needs to become as dynamic as the industry. Regulators need to know more about what is going on and learn about advancements as the industry creates them.

She says advancements have been so profound that it’s been hard for regulators to keep up with them. This has led to some disturbing delays in certification. Throughout the interview Campbell and Derks discuss the existing state of the industry and what’s needed to make it even better. Because of the impact of the aircraft avionics industry on all of aviation, this video provides a window into issues that affect everyone in aviation.
