Student Documentary Focuses On FAA's Implementation Of The Airline Safety Act

Wins Honorable Mention In C-SPAN StudentCam Competition

A high school junior has won honorable mention in a documentary competition organized by the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network (C-SPAN) for a film that focuses on the FAA's failure to fully implement the Airline Safety Act passed four years ago.

The student is Michael Pyskaty, and he attends Starpoint Central High School in Pendleton, NY north of Buffalo. It is his sixth award from C-SPAN for a documentary.

Pyskaty told the Buffalo News that he made the documentary because it is "disgusting that the FAA hasn't implemented these regulations."

Pyskaty's film includes interviews with Congressman Chris Collins (R-NY) and Karen Eckert, who represents the Families of Flight 3407. He also included archival video from C-SPAN of the debate in the House, where the bill passed by unanimous consent. Voice recordings from the flight's cockpit and air traffic control were also included.

The documentary was one of 2,355 submitted to the cable network for consideration.
