American Airlines Flight Targeted By Laser

Plane With 174 On Board Landed Safely

An American Airlines Airbus A321 on approach to San Diego was targeted by someone on the ground with a laser Tuesday, but the airliner was able to land safely.

ABC News reports that the airplane had 174 people on board at the time of the incident. The captain and flight crew of the airplane declined treatment from paramedics who were called to the scene, according to the report.

There are no suspects in the incident. Pilots reported more than 3,800 such incidents nationwide, according to statistics from the FAA.

Aiming a laser at an aircraft is a federal crime carrying penalties of up to a $250,000 fine and five years in prison.

The FAA has established a laser safety initiative to educate pilots and others about the dangers, and to increase reporting of such incidents.
