CAP Adds Tuskegee To Middle School AE

CAP Honors Tuskegee Airmen In Aerospace Education Program

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP), an auxiliary volunteer force of the United States Air Force (USAF) recently announced a new partnership with the Tuskegee Airmen Inc to share CAP’s aerospace educational resources with middle schools. According to the new agreement that was formalized last year, CAP’s Aerospace Education program has produced a new booklet, aimed at middle schoolers, and which highlights the notable achievements of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Civil Air Patrol has already made the information available online to its members, external aerospace education members, and the Tuskegee Airmen Inc (TAI) nationwide, and will be available in print next year for TAI to use in its outreach activities. TAI's President Jerry "Hawk" Burton is ready to get started. USAF Gen Daniel “Chappie” James, the first African American four-star general is also featured in the guide. External Aerospace members are teachers who subscribe and use CAP’s aerospace education curriculum in their classrooms.

While CAP has been following the USAF’s guidance on diversity, inclusion, and equity, they have also, in recent years, made a conscious effort to ensure the promotional, educational, and other material is representative of the communities they serve, and to promote CAP as welcoming to all, regardless of ability, race, gender, religion, and all other characteristics of diversity. Maj. Gen Phelka, CAP commander, sees great opportunityf for collaboration.

In this partnership, both CAP and TAI will seek to promote cross-membership, in that as a member of one, you can also join the other. Furthermore, CAP stands to benefit from TAI flight instructors who can participate In CAP’s Cadet Wings program, or serve as orientation ride pilots, as well as TAI members who are willing to serve as guest speakers for CAP events.
