FAA Investigates Why Cropduster Crash Went Unreported

Pilot Walked Away, But No Report Filed

The FAA and NTSB are looking into the crash of a Schweitzer G-164B cropduster which went down February 23rd near Byron, CA, but which was not immediately reported to either agency.

Television Station KTVU reports that a private pilot made air traffic controllers aware of the crash after he spotted the airplane upside down in a marsh near Byron. It had apparently gone down in a tomato field in San Joaquin County.

The pilot sustained no worse than minor injuries, and was able to walk away from the accident. Media reports indicate that local authorities knew about the crash as early as last Tuesday, but it was not reported to the requisite federal agencies until several days later. Officials who have since spoken to the pilot and owner of the plane say the field was too muddy to recover it immediately, and they planned to do so as soon as conditions permit.
