AD: Pratt & Whitney Division (PW) Turbofan Engines

AD NUMBER: 2019-03-01

PRODUCT: Certain Pratt & Whitney Division (PW) PW4074, PW4074D, PW4077, PW4077D, PW4084D, PW4090, and PW4090-3 turbofan engines.

ACTION: Final Rule.

SUMMARY: This AD was prompted by an in-flight failure of a 1st-stage low-pressure compressor (LPC) blade.

This AD requires initial and repetitive thermal acoustic imaging (TAI) inspections for cracks in certain 1st-stage LPC blades and removal of those blades that fail inspection.

DATES: This AD is effective March 22, 2019.

COST: The FAA estimates that this AD affects 120 engines installed on airplanes of U.S. registry. Operators may incur the following costs in order to comply with this AD:

  • Inspection 22 work-hours × $85 per hour = $1,870 per aircraft.
  • Replace 1st-stage LPC blade: Parts; $125,000. Cost per aircraft $125,000
