Nav Canada Looks at Low Numbers

Crummy Quarter Even Worse Than Expected

Nav Canada, the nonprofit navigational services corporation that the airlines and air freight folks in Canada depend on for ATC, weather briefings, airport advisories, etc., said Monday that its predictions of a dismal quarter were right; they just weren't dismal enough.

The September-November quarter (Q1 of FY 2003) showed revenues of C$227 million, yielding a gross profit of a near-negligible (but positive!) $5 million, after adjustments.

That revenues were lower than expectations was offset by lower headcount numbers at the service. That smaller headcount translated into lower salary and training outlays.

Nevertheless, Nav Canada increased its fees by 3% at the first of the year, and is lobbying to hold union-labor wages at current levels, indefinitely.
