Gyrocopter Down Near Knoxville, IA Municipal Airport

Two On Board Refused Medical Treatment

A gyrocopter went down Monday near the Knoxville (IA) municipal airport (KOXV), but fortunately both of the people on board survived with only minor injuries.

The Journal Express newspaper report that, according to Knoxville fire chief Jim Mitchell, the gyrocopter wend down shortly after takeoff Monday afternoon. He said the aircraft lost power, and the pilot appeared to be attempting an emergency landing.

The aircraft broke a power line as it came down, according to the report, and there was a small grass fire in a roadside ditch.

Both occupants of the aircraft refused medical treatment.

Television station WHO reports that a witness said that he has seen the aircraft flying in and out of the airport for about a year. The Marion County Sheriff's Office said they were notified about 1341 local time about the accident.

Marion County Sheriff chief deputy Troy Fisher said that such accidents are rare in the county. This was the first accident he's worked in his 16 years with the department.
