Undertaking The Adventure To Raise Awareness For Breast Cancer
A Scottish-born hang glider pilot has embarked on a journey from south Texas to the Canadian border in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Pilot Robin Hamilton lives in Houston. He departed last Friday from West Houston Airport and headed north.
Hamilton told MSN that he chose to raise awareness for breast cancer with the flight because he lost his mother to the disease when he was 13. He has partnered with the Susan G. Komen foundation for his challenging flight.
While he has prepared as best he can, Hamilton said that a lot of the trip will depend on wind and other weather conditions. "We could end up at the Canadian border in Montana, we could end up far, far east of that. We just don’t know.” If the winds are favorable out of the south, he could cover as many as 200 miles per day. But headwinds out of the north could push him the other direction.
At least one other pilot has committed to making the entire trip with Hamilton, and others plan to join him for legs along the way. He has also organized ground support to ensure safety and keep him supplied as he flies to the north. He said that he will try to arrive as close to airports as possible along the way, but that is a goal rather than a solid plan.
In many cases, Hamilton hopes to have pilots tow him into the air to start each day's flight, but if he's not at an airport, "we'll just have to look for a hill."
