Russia To Buy 50 Boeing 737's

Deal Reportedly Worth $3.7 Billion

A Russian leasing company has reportedly agreed to buy 50 Boeing 737s which it then plans to lease to Aeroflot.

The company is Russian Technologies, which controls Moscow's investment in aircraft for 12 regional airlines. USA Today reports that the company's director general Sergei Chemezov said in a statement that the deal "will help take a step forward in making the Russian airline industry and Russian airlines more competitive on the global market."

The Associated Press reports that Russian Technologies also has an option with Boeing for an additional 35 of the single-aisle jets. Aeroflot will use the Boeings to upgrade its rapidly-aging fleet of airplanes.

The Russian government holds 51.2 percent of Aeroflot. Russian news agencies cite Chemezov as saying Russian Technologies is hoping to get a seat on Aeroflot's board due to the deal.
