Lunar Rover Prototype Mistakenly Sold For Scrap

But The Story Has A Happy Ending

This might have been a junk picker's dream. An Air Force historian made a rare random discovery back in early 2014 ... a prototype of the lunar rover built by NASA for the Apollo program that was mouldering in a back yard in Alabama.

The historian sent word of the find up the chain, but the wheels of government turn slowly, and by the time they followed up on the lead, the person who owned the rare piece of space memorabilia had died, and those handling the estate had sold it to a local scrap dealer.

That might have been a sad end to the story, but Engadget relays a report from Motherboard that said the scrapper had more than an inkling of what he had acquired ... probably for a song ... and did not take the rover apart. He sent images to Motherboard proving that it is still intact, and he has plans to sell it "soon," according to the report.

There was no word on a suggested price.
