T-6 Down Near Las Cruces; Pilots Eject Safely

Navy Says Airplane Was Taking Part In A Training Mission

A T-6A Texan II tandem-seat, turboprop trainer, assigned to Training Wing 4, based at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, went in Las Cruces, New Mexico, after the pilots conducted a controlled ejection during a routine training flight.

The two pilots ejected safely and were evaluated for minor injuries, according to a Navy news release.

Las Cruces Fire Department Chief Steve Mims said in an email that the plane "experienced a landing gear failure. Attempts were made to trouble shoot the problem but they were unsuccessful. A decision was made to burn off fuel, conduct a controlled ejection and allow the plane to crash."

The email was forwarded to the Associated Press by Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima. He had been first to report the accident on his Twitter account.

The Navy said that the names of the pilots are being withheld for privacy reasons. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
