Peru Rejoins ICAO After 15 Year Absence

Colombia also joins ICAO in recognition of contributions to industry and technological evolution

Peru has been voted into the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) after a 15-year absence from the forum where the highest level of discussions related to worldwide aviation are held. Colombia has also been voted into the organization for a three year period.

The result of the vote during the 35th Annual ICAO Assembly in Montreal "once again places a Peruvian representative squarely into the debates related to international aviation decisions, on fundamental subjects such as aviation security," according to the Foreign Relations Office of the government of Peru.

The country garnered 135 votes from the assembled delegates, one of the highest vote results during the proceedings. As a member of ICAO, Peru will have access to opportunities to participate in technical issues such as airborne navigation, security and aviation infrastructure. It will also have an opportunity to actively participate in the regulation of international civil aviation.

Colombia's entry into ICAO was supported by 134 delegates, and was based on its contributions to aviation, as well as the significant evolution that the industry has undergone in recent years in that country.

ICAO was formed in 1944 for the purpose of promoting the safe and orderly development of civil aviation across the entire world. It is a specialized component of the United Nations which promotes cooperation in all areas related to aviation between its 188 member states.
