Where There's Smoke, There's An Evacuation

Hot Suitcase Delays US Airways Flight

A US Airways/America West flight was delayed Tuesday morning at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, when baggage crews spotted smoke eminating from a suitcase being loaded into the aircraft's cargo hold.

As passengers who had already boarded the Boeing 737-300 were hurried off the plane, crews checked the bag and determined there were no explosives in the suitcase, reports CBS News.

The A-17 gate in Terminal 4 was also evacuated, as hazmat teams moved in.

It's not yet known -- or, at least, has not yet been reported -- why the suitcase was smoking. PHX spokeswoman Julie Rodriguez said the owner of the suitcase was a passenger on the flight, and was being questioned on the matter.

The flight was delayed approximately one hour. Flight 200 to San Antonio, TX was reboarded, and departed PHX just before noon.
