The gondola of the balloon which apparently went down during a thunderstorm while competing in the race became entangled in the net of a fishing vessel deep underwater. The bodies were discovered inside the gondola. MSNBC reports that documents found in the gondola confirm the identities of Abruzzo and Rymer Davis.

Gordon Bennett Race Director Don Cameron told the BBC that "It is very sad news, but it was, of course, expected."

An investigation as to why the balloon went down during the storm is continuing.
