Airborne 06.02.25: Isaacman UN-Nomination, 28K' Paraglider Flt, Williams Builds

Jared ‘Rook’ Isaacman has been dropped, shortly before a final confirmation vote, as the Trump admin nominee to head NASA. The move has shocked the space community, who seemed fairly well aligned in their support for the two-time private astronaut. A routine paragliding equipment test went wrong when a strong updraft pushed the pilot to an altitude of 28,000 feet. He was able to regain enough control to get back on the ground, where he will stay for the next six months due to the flight ban imposed thereafter. Experienced Chinese paraglide

Contributing To The Outcome Was The Pilot’S Failure To Maintain Airspeed And His Exceedance Of The Motorglider’S Critical Angle Of Attack 

Analysis: The kit manufacturer manager reported that the accident flight was the pilot/builder’s second flight in the motorglider (file photo, below), the first of which was two days before the accident. A witness at the airport reported seeing the pilot taxi for takeoff and that the engine sounded “a bit rough,” but due to the nature of the small two-stroke engine he was not concerned. The witness reported that the motorglider took off and, when it reached about 100 ft to 150 ft above ground level (agl), the engine sputtered then went silent.
