Airborne 12.20.17: Stratolaunch Is Alive!, V-280 Valor Flies!, Rotax 915 Cert

Also: Stroudsburg-Pocono Airport, Mirabel Completes 5,000th, Continental Motors, Global Connected Aircraft Summit

This past weekend, the Scaled test team successfully executed a low speed taxi test of the Stratolaunch aircraft. During this initial taxi test, the aircraft moved down the runway under its own power for the first time. T

hese first test points have demonstrated the fundamental ability to control the aircraft speed and direction on the runway. The V-280 Valor has achieved first flight. The V-280 Valor is a next-generation tiltrotor that is designed to provide agility, speed, range and payload capabilities at an affordable cost. “This is an exciting time for Bell Helicopter, and I could not be more proud of the progress we have made with first flight of the Bell V-280,” says Mitch Snyder, President & CEO for Bell Helicopter. “First flight demonstrates our commitment to supporting Department of Defense leadership’s modernization priorities and acquisition reform initiatives. The Valor is designed to revolutionize vertical lift for the U.S. Army and represents a transformational aircraft for all the challenging missions our armed forces are asked to undertake. EASA has certified the BRP Rotax 915 iSc3 A aircraft engine, and the company is working towards FAA certification of the new powerplant. “The EASA Type Certificate (TC) allows BRP-Rotax to now produce the certified 915 iSc3 A engine for the European market thus allowing us to fulfill the request of our customers for a more powerful Rotax aircraft engine with proven reliability,” said Thomas Uhr, general manager BRP Rotax, vice president Powertrain BRP and R&D / Operations Lynx. “Not only has the certification been achieved within the promised time schedule but the engine has been certified to even higher power than originally announced. Instead of 136hp maximum power the engine will offer 141hp maximum power.” All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
