Young Woman Flies Ultralight Across The Atlantic

Aarohi Pandit Made The Crossing In A Pipistrel Sinus 912

A 23-year-old woman from Mumbai, India believes she is the first woman to fly across the Atlantic ocean in an ultralight airplane.

Aarohi Pandit made the crossing of more than 1,620 nautical miles from Nuuk, Greenland to Iqaluit, the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. She took off Monday, May 13 and landed the following day after making the crossing in what she described as "extreme weather conditions", according to a report from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

She made the flight in a Pipistrel Sinus 912 airplane, which weighs just over 880 pounds and is classified as an ultralight in Europe. She describes flying the airplane as "riding a white bird with long wings."

The Atlantic crossing is part of a circumnavigation attempt by Pandit. Called the WE! (Women Empower) Expedition, she began her journey in India, and has made stops in Iran, Turkey, across Europe, Scotland, Greenland and now Canada. Her planned route takes her to Alaska, then on to Russia and back to India.

Pandit plans to complete her journey by July 30.

Pandit began flying at the age of 17, and is a commercial pilot in India.
