Classic Aero-TV: Carbon Cub At Play -- Too Much Fun For Words

One More Reason That Campbell LOVES His Job....

It's been REALLY busy hereabouts lately, as the ANN HQ crew seems to find more and more things to do at a time when most folks would think we could take it easy for a while. Yeah... not a chance. Still, there's busy... and there's BUSY. And when busy means spending a day with the Carbon Cub, life ain't all that bad.

This bird has gotten quite a buzz... as the folks at CubCrafters went gonzo in creating the ultimate Mongo-Cub for those folks that simply aren't happy with what everyone else is flying. The Carbon Cub SS maxes out the abilities of the Cub thanks to extensive re-engineering that resulted in a parts count that declined by 50 percent and also slashed 250 pounds from the empty weight (against a similarly equipped Super Cub).

Add that to additional design augmentations that included boosting the horsepower to a lofty 180 horsepower (giving the beast a solid power to weight ratio of 7.33 lbs/hp and you get a honking 2100 fpm, along with some great handling... offered up by some very dedicated aerodynamic refinements that have turned this thing into a flying work of art.

At the end of our photo mission, the truly foolish folks of SWT Aviation (who owned this particular bird) tossed the keys to ANN's Jim Campbell... who promptly hauled off KSGJ's Rwy 02 in just under 400 feet (not wanting to show off) and heading aloft at over 2000 fpm... and all this occurred AFTER he'd had lunch. Yup... color us impressed.

So... enjoy our music video tour of a very cool day in the life of a Carbon Cub SS and go ahead and TRY to tell us that you don't want to fly this thing REALLY bad.
