Fatal Hangar Collapse Under Investigation

Unexpected Structural Failure Strikes Boise Workers

The investigation continues into a hangar under construction in Boise, Idaho that collapsed, killing 3 and injuring 9.

More than half of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving care at local hospitals. The City of Boise showed up in force from the get-go, bringing out 8 medic engines, 3 ladder trucks, 2 safety officers, 2 battalion chiefs, one division chief, a heavy rescue unit, and medical transport for a dozen patients. Initial fire crews focused on stabilizing the scene and plucking out the most accessible victims.

“This was an incredibly large emergency response involving many agencies from around our community,” said Boise Fire Division Chief of Operations Aaron Hummel. “We would like to thank all our public safety partners who assisted.”

Updates to the incident have shown that OSHA is now on the case, undoubtedly digging into the cause of such a catastrophic structural failure. Some unofficial reports made it sound as if the incident began with a crane collapsing, but further detail along those lines hasn't come up just yet.

“Yesterday was a tragic day for our Boise community. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected by this incident,” said Boise Fire Chief Mark Niemeyer. “I commend the actions of all the first responders for their quick and professional response rescuing victims and caring for patients in a chaotic and very dangerous environment.”

"Our community is facing a profound loss after the hangar collapse last night. Our thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones and those who are awaiting news on those still in critical conditions,” said Mayor Lauren McLean. “We owe a debt of gratitude to our first responders and emergency response teams for their quick, compassionate and professional actions last night and into today and we hold everyone involved in our hearts."
