Aero-TV: Cooling Your Airplane -- Portable A/C Systems for GA Aircraft

A REALLY Cool Video About Affordable/Portable Aircraft A/C

This video is really cool… Literally! At the AOPA Aviation Summit 2013, ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell took the time to cool off a bit by interviewing Craig Turton, the Owner and President of Arctic Air. Arctic Air produces portable air conditioners designed for use in aircraft. Some of these potable units operate with ice and some use an air conditioning compressor.

Turton said he wanted to come up with something that could beat the $25,000+++ price tag of having a full aviation approved air-conditioning system installed on an airplane. Turton explains that the ice versions come in varied sizes and power requirements to be adaptable to numerous models of airplanes. Depending on the model, the ice system can provide cooling for between 45 minutes to a couple of hours.

The more powerful units with standard air-conditioning compressors are also portable but do require some installation modifications. These units can really move the cool air and the only thing that limits their use is electrical load. Once installed the units can be quickly removed if weight becomes a concern or in cooler weather.

The video provides a good look at the various units and details as to their hookup and operation. This is a “cool” idea that has been too long in coming.
