Best of OSH25: MOSAIC Ready Airplanes, Hiding in Plain Sight

An Oshkosh Fixture Ready to Pounce on the Limelight

By Gene Yarbrough

The Spacek SD-1 Minisport is a Czech-designed and manufactured single-seat aircraft gaining popularity among amateur builders and recreational pilots. Available as plans, a kit, or a ready-to-fly aircraft, it's known for its affordability, performance, and fuel efficiency.

Design and construction
The SD-1 boasts a lightweight yet durable construction featuring a blend of wood, composites, and extruded polystyrene foam. The fuselage is a wood truss design, covered with plywood, while the wings and tail utilize composite spars with carbon fiber caps and polystyrene ribs, also covered in plywood. The detachable wings and tail simplify transportation and storage. The wing employs a GA 37U-A315 airfoil and incorporates flaperons for enhanced control and slow-flight capabilities.

Engine options and performance
The SD-1 accommodates a variety of engines ranging from 24 to 50 horsepower. Popular choices include the Hirth F33 (28 hp), Hirth F23 (50 hp), and Briggs & Stratton Vanguard (24 or 33 hp). Four-stroke engine options include the SE series (24, 31, 33, and 35 hp versions), known for their fuel efficiency, while two-stroke engines like the Hirth F-33 and F-23 offer lighter weight.
Performance figures vary depending on the chosen engine, but a typical SD-1 can reach a maximum speed of around 115 mph (185 km/h) and a cruise speed of 84 mph (135 km/h). It boasts a good climb rate of approximately 590 feet per minute (3 m/s) and a respectable glide ratio of 13:1. The aircraft has a fuel capacity of 34-35 liters (9 US gallons) and can achieve a range of up to 410 miles (660 km). Takeoff distances are reported to be as short as 200 feet.

Cabin and features
The single-seat cabin is designed for pilot comfort, accommodating individuals up to 6.1 feet tall in the standard version, with an XL option available for taller pilots. It features a 40-liter baggage compartment located behind the removable seatback. The aircraft can be equipped with a Dynon SkyView instrument panel, offering a comprehensive suite of avionics including airspeed indicator, altimeter, compass, vario, slip indicator, collision avoidance system, and radio. An emergency locator beacon is standard, and an optional ballistic parachute system is available for added safety. The SD-1 comes in both tailwheel (TD) and tricycle gear (TG) configurations.

Versatility and popularity
The SD-1's design complies with various regulations, including UK SSDR (Single Seat DeRegulated) rules for microlight aircraft, FAI UL, and LSA regulations, and the German "up to 120 kg empty weight" category. Its versatility, ease of assembly, and flight characteristics have contributed to its popularity, with over 113 units sold worldwide and approximately 41 flying by November 2015. The aircraft is currently the FAI European Microlight Champion.

The SD-1 has been displayed at Oshkosh for many years and is now poised to offer a uniquely affordable experience in the emerging MOSAIC market.
