SNC Breaks Ground On Huntsville, AL Hangar

Facility Will Expand Key Customer Support

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has expanded its presence in Huntsville, AL by breaking ground on a new aircraft modification and upgrade facility at the Madison County Executive Airport. The ceremony marked the culmination of 12 months of close collaboration with the Madison Executive Airport Authority and the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce to provide facilities specific to military fixed aircraft.

“We are excited to continue our successful partnership with U.S. Army Aviation, our strategic partners, and the local Huntsville community at large,” said Tim Owings, corporate vice president for SNC’s Integrated Mission Systems (IMS) business area.  “Huntsville is a hub for many of SNC’s key customers, including the U.S. Army. This aircraft modification and upgrade facility is representative of SNC’s continued commitment to the community and to Army aviation.”

The 130,000 square-foot facility will be built in two phases beginning in March; it is expected to be completed and fully operational in early 2017, with the potential to bring as many as 200 new jobs to the Huntsville area. Phase I includes construction of a 30,000 square-foot hangar for aircraft modifications and upgrades in support of SNC programs currently in or near in production. It will meet NFPA 409 and NAS 3306 requirements and will take approximately 10 months to construct. Phase II is being planned in preparation for future fixed- and rotary- winged program support to include an additional 100,000 square-foot hangar facility.

SNC’s Huntsville facility has been in operation since 2012 and supports three of the company’s significant business areas: Integrated Mission Systems (IMS), Space Systems (SS), and Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/ Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM). Between its locations in Huntsville, Alabama and Hagerstown, Maryland, SNC supports approximately 600 employees, plus numerous other subcontractors in the state of Alabama.
