Greenpeace Aircraft Down In Brazil, One On Board Fatally Injured

Carolina Nyberg-Steiser Did Not Survive The Accident

An employee of Greenpeace was fatally injured last week when the amphibious Cessna 208 Caravan she was aboard with four other people went down in a river about 111 miles west of the city of Manaus in Brazil.

According to a statement from the NGO, Carolina Nyberg-Steiser, 29, from Greenpeace Nordic, was traveling in the plane that crashed while landing on the river Rio Negro near the city of Manaus, capital of the northern state of Amazonas in Brazil. There is no confirmed information on the causes of the accident. The accident occurred Tuesday (Oct. 17) at around 11:50 a.m. Manaus time.

"Carolina was visiting our Brazil office to meet with her colleagues and learn more about the campaign to protect the Amazon. She was on a flight to see firsthand the beauty of the forest," the statement says.

"The four others onboard, including the pilot, all survived, sustaining light injuries.

"Out of respect to Carolina’s family we are not commenting further at this time.

"Carolina will be deeply missed by all of us. Our thoughts are with her family."

Climate Change News reports that this is the second time a Greenpeace Plane has been involved in an accident in the Brazilian Amazon in two years.

Through its press office, Greenpeace Brazil said that it is "concentrating all our efforts on providing assistance to the victims and their families and also collaborating with the competent bodies that are investigating the event.”
