Marine F-18's Collide Over Oregon

Two dead, one survived, listed in good condition

Two USMC F-18 jets, one a single-seater, the other a two-seat trainer, collided over the Columbia River in Oregon, killing two of the three pilots.

"We have two pilots that have been found dead, one on the Oregon side of the Columbia River and one on the Washington (state) side," Chris Fitzsimmons, Emergency Management Coordinator for Oregon's Gilliam County, told Reuters by telephone.

The third pilot was injured and transported to Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, Oregon. He is listed in good condition.

Eyewitnesses said they saw three parachutes after the crash, which indicates all three managed to eject from the aircraft. The F-18's were based out of Miramar (CA) and were on their way from Portland (OR) to an MOA when they collided on or about 14:30.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and witnesses described hearing a loud explosion and a fireball, according to Fitzsimmons.
