Colorado Group Awards $24,000 In Scholarships

SIC Type Rating Provided By Flight Safety International

The Colorado Aviation Business Association (CABA) Foundation announced the presentation of three scholarship awards at its Annual Membership Meeting on March 5, 2025. In conjunction with Flight Safety International, the group also presented an Initial SIC Type Rating Scholarship.

The CABA Foundation has been supporting young people aspiring to careers in aviation through its scholarship program since 2011. The scholarships were increased in value to $8,000 each in 2024 and are awarded in three categories: flight training, aircraft maintenance technician, and professional development. This is the second consecutive year that Flight Safety has generously contributed an Initial SIC Type Rating award.

The three recipients this year were:
Flight Training: Anna (Annie) Johanning, currently holds a Commercial Single-engine certificate with Instrument rating. She will use the funds for her Commercial Multi-engine certificate at McAir Aviation in Broomfield, Colorado.

Aviation Maintenance Technician: Aaron Borgens, who will use the funds to complete his A&P certification at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Broomfield, Colorado.

Professional Development: Kenneth Ham, currently holds an A&P certificate and started his own maintenance business with the goal of gaining Part 145 Repair Station certification. He will use the funds to purchase equipment and tools to grow his business and obtain business development training.

The Flight Safety International SIC Initial Type Rating scholarship: Mathew Thrun, currently works at Wheels Up managing Crew Training and Planning. He holds a Commercial Single-Engine certificate and Instrument rating with 330 hours of Total flight time. When he completes the Type Rating he is fully committed to a career in general/business aviation in a Part 135 operation.

Matt Fishback, CABA Foundation Scholarship Chair said, "CABA is proud to support the aviation career aspirations of young people in Colorado and to bolster the next generation of the industry workforce. The generous contributions from our event sponsors and industry partners help drive our ability to provide this support."

Since 2011, CABA has supported workforce development in aviation with awards to approximately 60 young people totaling over $100,000. The awards are supported by events such as the annual golf tournament and through generous contributions by our industry partners such as Flight Safety International, Enterprise Holdings, and CAE.
