New Zealand Defense Force Retires Seasprite Helicopters

Will Be Replaced By Upgraded Super Seasprite Models

The New Zealand Defense Force has officially retired the SH-2G Seasprite helicopters from service, according to military officials there.

United Press International reports that the retirement ceremony was held recently in Auckland, with the final SH-2G helo expected to be pulled from service later this month.

The NZDF purchased five of the Seasprites in 2001, and they have logged over 15,000 hours in a variety of missions.

The SH-2G aircraft will be replaced by a fleet of eight new SH-2G(I) aircraft.

During the retirement ceremony, Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Tony Davies said upgrading the fleet of naval helicopters "gives the New Zealand Defence Force a significant increase in capability."

The upgraded rotorcraft will have new sensors and weapons as well as upgraded cockpits and communications systems.
