Singapore Airlines Retires Last 747 From Passenger Service

Moving To More Efficient 777s, A380s

The last passenger flight by a Boeing 747 for Singapore Airlines occurred Friday, as the commemorative farewell trip carried more than 350 passengers from Hong Kong to Singapore.

The airline at one time had one of the world's largest fleets of 747s, but it is retiring them all in favor of Boeing 777s and A380s for its long-haul routes. Airline officials said that the decision to purchase the airplanes in 1972 was "bold," allowing the airline to fly to destinations it could not otherwise reach.

The French news service AFP reports that the airline's cargo division would continue to operate a fleet of 13 747 freighters.
