Defibrillators: One More Item On The Checklist

Heart Shockers Now Required On Most US Flights

Commercial aircraft (other than commuters) are now required to carry heart-shocking equipment that can save lives when time is of the essence. So far, automated external defibrillators have saved more than 45 people on aircraft, both in-flight and on the ground.

Mike Tighe was one of them.

He and his wife, Dolores, were headed from Boston to Los Angeles aboard an American Airlines flight, when he suffered a heart condition called ventricular fibrillation. It short-circuits the heart, but can be remedied by a quickly-applied electrical shock. Dolores, who's a nurse, performed CPR until flight attendants arrived with an AED. That was in 1998, two years after American voluntarily installed the devices aboard its non-commuter aircraft.

"It's such a gift," said Tighe, in an interview with USA Today. "My gracious, look how many people have been saved."
