Chalet Suzanne To Close After 83 Years

Central Florida Fly-In Landmark Played Host To Astronauts, Dignitaries, War Heros

A central Florida landmark will be closing and selling off its assets in early August. After continuous operation for 83 years, the current family owners of Chalet Suzanne in Lake Wales say they plan to retire and sell the historic inn.

In an open letter addressed to its patrons from over the years, Dee and Eric Hinshaw say "the time has come to let go of our love affair with this  wonderful creation of Bertha Hinshaw and her family."

So why is this an aviation story? Well, the inn is situated on a public use airport with a 2313-foot lighted sod runway (X25), and has been a fly-in destination for years. It has also played host to celebrities, dignitaries, astronauts and war heroes. And the chalet has the distinction of providing "the only soup available to Earthlings and the Man in the Moon alike."

The Hinshaw family, now five generations since the enterprise began, has been the energy behind it all. Dee and Eric said in the letter that, equally important as the VIPs who have stayed at the inn are the thousands of people who have labored here through the decades, each one adding their own flavor to our history. "We thank all of you for helping to make this amazing adventure worthwhile."

Dee and Eric say they are choosing to retire their efforts at the inn, sell the property, and look for "other opportunities to serve the community and The Lord."

Normal operations will be discontinued in four to six weeks, around Monday, August, 4th. Reservations for lunch, dinner or overnight will be accepted until then.

"If you would like to have the opportunity to have one last farewell evening, or if you've always wanted to come but never quite made it, this is your chance, maybe your last chance, to experience the Chalet Suzanne and it's glorious history."

The inn and surrounding property are to be sold, either as a turnkey business or in pieces. Dee and Eric plan a silent auction for many of the items located around the property. "Tables and chairs, many containing priceless tiles and art from around the world, antique furniture and keepsakes, lamps and linens will be up for bidding. If you don't see a number on the item that you are interested in, just take a picture and email it to us with an offer," they said.
