Six Pilots Report Laser Flashings Over North Texas

All Were Landing On DFW's 18 Right

Just when you thought it was safe to leave the protective goggles in your flight bag comes word that no fewer than six commercial flights were "lit up" by lasers on approach to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Sunday night. All six aircraft were headed for landings on DFW's Runway 18R.

"Right now we're characterizing it as having observed laser activity," said FBI Special Agent Lori Bailey in an interview with the Dallas Morning News. "It would be different from somebody actually getting targeted with a laser light."

If that had been the case, Bailey said, the person responsible for shining a laser at aircraft might face 25-years in prison and a $500,000 fine for each incident.

The aircraft affected Sunday included three planes operated by American Airlines, two with American Eagle and one Delta jet. An FAA spokesman said the green laser light emanated from a group of homes about 14 miles northwest of Argyle, TX. So far, there have been no arrests.
