Airborne 03.11.19: SpaceX Crew Dragon, Austro AE300, Airbus New H145

Also: HAI HELI-EXPO 2019, Arriel 2H, Trans States Airlines, Yahav To Be CEO Of Universal Av

NASA passed a major milestone Friday in its goal to restore America’s human spaceflight capability when SpaceX’s Crew Dragon returned to Earth after a five-day mission docked to the International Space Station.

About 6 hours after departing the space station, Crew Dragon splashed down at 8:45 a.m. EST approximately 230 miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida. SpaceX retrieved the spacecraft from the Atlantic Ocean. Demonstration Mission-1 (Demo-1) was an uncrewed flight test designed to demonstrate a new commercial capability developed under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. The mission began March 2, when the Crew Dragon launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Diamond Aircraft’s Austro Engine program has started AE300 series production -- with the release of the first AE300 and AE330 units, late last month. The initial engines will now start extended test campaigns. Over the next few months, Austro Engine will ramp up for continuous serial production with a plan to build some 100 engines by the start of 2020. Airbus Helicopters has unveiled a new version of its H145 light twin-engine helicopter. This latest upgrade brings a new, five-bladed rotor to the multi-mission H145, and increases the useful load of the helicopter by 330 pounds. The H145’s new five-bladed rotor brings a significant increase in overall performance, with a maximum take-off weight raised to 3,800 kg and a useful load now equivalent to the aircraft’s empty weight. The new bearingless main rotor design will also reportedly ease maintenance operations, further improving the benchmark serviceability and reliability of the H145. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
