GAMA Releases Q1 2023 Aircraft Shipment and Billings Report

Increasing Deliveries Across Most Aircraft Segments

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) is an industry trade association representing the interests of general aviation aircraft manufacturers and stakeholders. The Washington, D.C.-headquartered organization seeks to foster and advance the general welfare, safety, interests, and activities of the global business and general aviation industries.

On 25 May 2023, GAMA released its first-quarter 2023 General Aviation Aircraft Shipment and Billing Report—a well-crafted lens through which the wellbeing of the general and business aviation sectors may be summarily glimpsed.

The aircraft manufacturing industry’s results for 2023’s first three months—compared to the same period in 2022—indicate increasing unit deliveries across most aircraft segments. The overall value of shipments was slightly lower for fixed-wing aircraft, but increased for helicopters.

GAMA president and CEO Pete Bunce stated: “The continued health of general aviation manufacturing industry is encouraging, particularly in light of persistent supply chain, workforce, and North American regulatory process [Biden administration] challenges. Our manufacturers are focused on meeting this thriving product demand with new aircraft which incorporate advanced technologies that further enhance safety and fuel performance. During this transformative time in aerospace, our manufacturers continually demonstrate that our sector is the technology incubator for safety and sustainability.”

Mr. Bunce added: “This message is being emphasized this week at EBACE in Geneva and will also be a focus at the Paris Airshow as we counter the short-sighted, irrational attacks directed upon business aviation in Europe.  In stark contrast, emphasis on our demonstrated record of environmental sustainability leadership was very well received on Capitol Hill in early May, when GAMA member company leaders participated in more than 125 meetings with U.S. legislators. Other issues discussed with Senators and Representatives across the political spectrum included the immediate need for a confirmed FAA Administrator, improved training for the young FAA workforce, strengthened bilateral engagement, and timely passage of an FAA reauthorization bill to provide clear, multi-year direction for the agency.”

Aircraft shipments through 2023’s first quarter—considered against the same time period in 2022—saw piston airplane deliveries increase 10.1-percent to 294 units, and turboprop deliveries increase 6.4-percent to 117 units. Business jet deliveries remained flat, however, equaling 2022’s Q1 mark of 117 units. The total value of airplane deliveries through 2023’s first quarter was $3.7-billion.

Helicopter shipments—compared to 2022’s first quarter—were robust. Piston helicopter deliveries increased by forty-percent to 56 units, while turbine helicopter deliveries increased by an impressive 53-percent to 153 units.
