Aero-News Alert: Jack Pelton Named Cessna's New CEO

It wasn't an unexpected development in light of the extended medical leave of Cessna's highly respected Charlie Johnson, but ANN has just learned that Cessna has just announced the selection of a new CEO.

Textron Inc. has just announced that effective immediately, Jack J. Pelton has been named president and chief executive officer of Cessna Aircraft Company, the world's leading producer of light and mid-size business jets and a flagship Textron company. Pelton will report to Textron Chief Operating Officer Steven Loranger and replaces Charlie Johnson, who has retired after more than 20 years with the company.

For the past four months, Pelton (below, right), 45, has filled this leadership role at Cessna while Johnson was on medical leave.

He joined Cessna in November 2000 as senior vice president of product engineering with full responsibility for the company's engineering and product development activities, including new aircraft design, development, flight test and certification, and product improvements for all aircraft in production and service.

"We're extremely fortunate to have proven leaders like Jack on board to build on Cessna's rich foundation of success and market leadership. He is a highly talented executive and a natural choice to lead Cessna into the future," said Textron Chairman, President and CEO Lewis B. Campbell. "As the industry begins to rebound from the downturn in the economy, a long-range competitive product plan will be key to moving Cessna to an even higher level of market leadership. Jack has the experience and knowledge to make that happen."

Pelton's extensive aviation industry career has spanned three decades. Prior to joining Cessna, he served as senior vice president of engineering and programs at Fairchild Dornier in Germany and was responsible for the company's 728JET aircraft family. He also spent nearly 20 years at McDonnell Douglas where he held related executive positions of increasing responsibility.

"Not only does Jack have a vast knowledge of the aviation industry, product development and operations management, he is totally committed to delivering the highest quality aircraft and providing the best customer service in the industry. These traits have been evident since he joined the company," said Loranger.

"Textron continues to invest in Cessna as a cornerstone of our family of powerful brands, and we have great confidence in Jack and the rest of the Cessna leadership team," Loranger continued. "As the business jet market regains momentum, Cessna will be well positioned to maintain its market leadership, with a product line and service capability that are second to none."

Yes, He's A Pilot!

Pelton holds BS and MS degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Hamilton University. He is a resident of Wichita and currently serves on the board of directors for the General Aviation Manufacturers Association and Wichita's Habitat for Humanity.

A commercial, instrument-rated pilot, he is Citation rated and flies regularly as pilot in command.
