Airline Pilot Hiring Summary for August 2004

850 more pilots find work in August; 6,672 hired so far this year

More than 850 pilots received jobs within the airline industry in August, bringing the total of airline pilots hired so far this year to 6,672. As of August, airlines reporting to AIR, Inc. announced they still needed over 2,400 pilots before the end of the year -- approximately 230 for the Majors, 1,000 in the Nationals, 770 needed for the Jet Operators, and 400 within the Non-Jet sector. Six out of fourteen (42.9%) major airlines are still hiring pilots, 22 out of 32 (68.8%) in the Nationals, 43 out of 46 (93.5%) within the Jet Operator division, and 47 out of 50 carriers in the Non-Jet Operator region.

There is still much upheaval with a few major airlines struggling to reach profitability. US Airways is threatening to refile for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection if it does not gain life-saving concessions from its labor unions.

Delta Air Lines announced September 7 that it will cut an additional 7,000 jobs, roughly ten percent of its word force, and discontinue operating DFW as a hub.

In addition to its latest notice that it will not be make any pension fund contributions this year, Continental will reduce its clerical and management staff by 425.

United Airlines has pushed back filing its reorganization plan until December and ATA will run out of hard cash by the beginning of 2005.

On the positive side, Northwest will be recalling 45 pilots in October and 15 in November, leaving 727 pilots on furlough status.

The next AIR, Inc. Career Seminar, Forum, and Job Fair is scheduled for September 18 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner in Washington (DC). AirNet, AirTran Airways, American Eagle, Atlantic Southeast Airlines, CitionShares, Colgan Air, Comair, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical, ExpressJet, FedEx, Flexjet, Gulfstream Flight Academy, JetBlue, NetJets, Southwest, Tab Express, and US Airways/PSA Airlines will be attending.
