Mitchell Airport Drops 'General' From Its Name

Now Known As Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport

The airport named for General Billy Mitchell, who was a strong advocate for the use of aircraft during WWI and later became the United States Director of Military Aeronautics, has undergone a small, but some may find significant, rebranding.

Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport has been named Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. The term "General" has been dropped from the airport brand.

Television Station WITI reports that, according to airport spokesman Harold Mester, the change was made to better identify the airport's geographic region and better market the airport to passengers.

"Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, rather than General Mitchell International Airport. We’re proud of our city and our namesake,” Mester said.

General Mitchell recognized the importance of aviation as the world stood on the brink of WWI. After the war, he promoted all types of aviation. He was instrumental in the planning and building of a strong air force, and nurturing the nascent commercial industry to give it a firm foundation on which to grow.
