Historic First For Light Sport Aviation

First Powered Parachute License Issued

Baron Taylor of Robesonia, PA earned the very first Sport Pilot certificate with powered parachute privileges Monday after completing his sport pilot evaluation at Sebring, FL. Larry Littlefield of Boynton Beach, FL conducted the evaluation.

The flight portion of the evaluation took place in a Pegasus, a 2 place aircraft that comes standard with a 65 horsepower Rotax engine. They fly between 26 and 35 miles per hour. (file photo)

Sport Pilot Examiner candidates are also training in Sebring this week. Eight candidates started today, and plan to complete their course on Saturday. There are representatives from the airplane, powered parachute, and weight shift control communities.

Martin Weaver, manager of the Light Sport Standardization Branch, is on location for the training program. The branch manages and provides oversight of the Sport Pilot Examiner and the Light Sport Aircraft Repairman training programs.
