Unions File Complaints Against NWA

Airline Accused Of Not Informing Workers About Bomb Threat

Three unions representing Northwest Airlines workers filed grievances Tuesday, charging the company didn't tell them about bomb threats on three flights.

"I had some really irate mechanics because they just walked right up to this airplane," said Bob Rose, president of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association Local 5 in Detroit.

All three bomb threats, uncovered March 30th, proved to be bogus. One aircraft was searched in Detroit, another in Los Angeles and a third was searched twice -- once in Memphis and again in Miami.

Northwest refused comment on the union complaints.

Rose said two other unions -- the Association of Professional Flight Attendants and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers had also filed grievances.

The unions' contract with Northwest state anyone working near a plane under threat must be notified. But now, the unions want more. They want a specific protocol that calls for immediate notification of workers in case of a threat.
