Tennessee Aviation Program Turning High Schoolers into Homebuilders

Liberty Creek High School Students Begin Constructing Zenith Aircraft Kit

In less than three years, a Tennessee high school has turned its brand-new aviation program into a full-blown kit building workshop. Students are currently in the process of tearing down a Zenith sport plane before reassembling it and, eventually, getting to watch their hard work take flight.

Liberty Creek High School was opened just over two years ago in Gallatin, Tennessee. While it has several career and technical education (CTE) pathways, the school was put on the map for its expansive aviation program. Students gained foundational aviation knowledge that can transition seamlessly into local flight training programs should they choose to pursue a career as pilots.

The centerpiece of the homebuilding opportunity is a Zenith STOL CH 701, known for its exceptional short-field performance and being what many owners call a ‘Sky Jeep'. The kit is owned by a local pilot who graciously (and somewhat boldly) decided to let Liberty Creek High School students and their supervisors give homebuilding a try.

Students are currently in the process of tearing down the airframe to construct the kit from scratch. The same will soon be done with the aircraft’s powerplant, a 100 hp Rotax 912 ULS. They hope to complete the build in time to watch it compete at the October 2026 short takeoff and landing (STOL) event, which is held annually at the Music City Executive Airport (XNX).

The CH 701 won’t be the end of high school homebuilding. Once the bird is complete, the program will move onto assembling an Avid Flyer kit. There are even hopes for a third incoming aircraft within the next few years.

As if the kits aren’t impressive enough, the LCHS Aviation program is also equipped with top-notch simulators and drones. Students can practice flight on virtual reality True Course, Redbird FMX full motion, and other training devices within their classroom. For those aiming for the uncrewed route, the program offers a track to earning a Part 107 commercial drone certificate.

Liberty Creek’s aviation program is not only preparing students for future roles in the industry but also fostering a deeper connection between youth, the community, and the field of aviation. The hands-on opportunities offered are priceless, providing real-world experience and inspiration for the next generation of aviators.
