Airborne 03.01.19: Robinson R22 40th, Seaplane Ban Challenged, WingX Version 9

Also: Sean Archuleta GoFundMe, Frasca Delivers AS350 Sim, ATR Extends Type ‘A’, SWAPA Comments

No kidding... it's one of our favorite helicopters... and the same one that ANN Boss Jim Campbell earned his Commercial Heli ticket and his CFI-H in...

Robinson’s R22 officially turns 40-years-old on March 16th. In celebration, at this year’s Heli-Expo convention in Atlanta, Robinson will display a new R22 (S/N 4797, N40YR) painted in the same scheme and colors as the very first R22 (S/N 0001). While the exterior will pay tribute to the R22’s origins, the interior will showcase modern avionics including the Avidyne IFD 440 GPS/COM with built in Wi-Fi and Synthetic Vision. The aircraft is also equipped with a pilot-side accessory bar designed to support personal devices, e.g., iPhone or iPad. If you don't live in Colorado, you might be surprised to learn that there is an absolutely draconian legislative ban on the operation of seaplanes on state-controlled waters such as lake and rivers. The state legislature closed state-controlled waterways to seaplanes decades ago, citing overcrowding and the need to protect those waters from invasive species. Pilot Ray Hawkins is the leader of the Colorado Seaplane Initiative, which hopes to convince the legislature to reverse the ban. He says there are some 800 seaplane-rated pilots in the state who are, inexplicably, unable to use those ratings. WingX Version 9 is now available on the Apple App Store -- with a name change -- WingX Pro7 is now simply WingX. WingX Version 9 is a free upgrade for all users. The new version uses a completely new and improved Moving Map which requires new Moving Map files such as the VFR Sectionals, IFR Low/High Enroutes etc. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
