Second Black Box Recovered In Flash Airlines Crash

Robots Used To Search Red Sea Floor

French search teams, using undersea robots, have reportedly located the second black box from a Flash Airlines 737 that crashed into the Red Sea off Egypt's coast January 3rd. All 148 people on board died in the crash.

The first box, the flight data recorder, has already been recovered. It was located 3000 feet below the surface. It was retrieved by a French-operated robot.

"The box will now be moved to Cairo in a private plane. It will be taken to the laboratories of the civil aviation ministry where it will be analysed," said Egyptian crash investigation leader Shaker Qilada.

The French Navy says the second box lies in slightly shallower water, about 2625 feet down.

So far, neither French nor Egyptian officials suspect any sort of foul play or terrorism in the crash. Flash Airlines, an Egyptian charter company, had been banned from landing in Switzerland after a ramp check found several violations on both Flash Airlines 737s in 2002. Egypt, however, defends Flash Air's safety record. The airline's chairman says the Swiss ban had nothing to do with the safety of the aircraft. Since the accident, Flash Airlines has pulled its web site off the Internet.
